The Aloe Vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty, medicinal and skincare properties. In fact, its first use dates back to Ancient Egyptian times.

Part of the Liliaceae family, it is native to southeast Africa but is cultivated in dry soils worldwide.

It is recognised for its broad range of applications such as reliving the after-effects of sunburn, alleviating heartburn and being used as a safe and effective alternative to chemical-based mouthwashes.

Its inner clear gel is composed of 99.5% water and 0.5% of glucomannans, amino acids, lipids, sterols mucilage and vitamins A (Beta-Carotene), C and E, which provide antioxidant properties.

To celebrate the wide applications, and benefits of the ancient plant in personal care and cosmetic products, this month’s in-cosmetics North America ‘MARCOS Star of the Month’ is awarded to Atina for its Aloe Vera Powder.

The ‘plant of immortality’

Hailed by the Egyptians as the ‘plant of immortality’, Aloe Vera is rich in amino acids, with more than 75 potentially active components including vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids and amino acids.

Atina’s product is a fine powder that is less hygroscopic than freeze-dried alternatives on the market, meaning it absorbs less moisture from the air. The powder is obtained by rinsing the plant’s inner clear gel to remove any remnants of the juice, before being dehydrated and ground into a fine powder.

It can be added to formulations as a concentrated fine powder, or after being dissolved into water. Highly potent, the powder has a highly versatile nature and its soothing properties make it a powerful ingredient to add to a wide range of cosmetic, dermocosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. These include after-sun and aftershave formulations as well as hair masks and conditions, soaps and other soothing products in concentrations of 0.5-8%.
